Let's Take A Look A Martha.....Through My Glasses

We all know the story of Mary and Martha and then later of course these loving sisters watch Jesus raise their beloved brother from the dead.  All of this is a story we know, heard in Sunday school as a child, later from the pulpit, and now there are books galore.  Well, let's look at Martha from my glasses so to speak, for those of you that haven't seen me in while, yes I wear glasses now!  We have two sisters, two very different sisters.  Martha and Mary, both eagerly invite Jesus and his followers into their home for a wonderful meal.   Mary's heart is one to sit and listen and learn at Jesus' feet.  A very tender heart, one that has already learned the pricking of the Father to stop and listen and obey.  But stop a moment, Martha has a slightly different heart, and yes she is reprimanded by Jesus, and rightfully so, but does that mean that her heart was in the wrong place from the beginning?  I tend to think Martha had very much a servant's heart and her desire was to serve, and since that was her desire in her mind shouldn't that be her sister's desire as well and not to mention did her sister see how many people were in that house?  So instead of totally loosing it, like I would have, and letting her sister just completely have a piece of her mind, she went straight to Jesus and asked the honest question I would not have had the guts to ask.  Which here is where we see an honest answer, bottom line we get wrapped up in serving at times and forget to listen to God to stop for a moment for the bigger picture.  I don't think this teaching moment was to make Martha look one sided so to speak, or make Mary look that way either, this was one moment in time we get a glimpse of two different hearts and how those hearts have strong points and weak points, as all of our hearts do.  And later we see Jesus come back, after their beloved brother had died.  These two sisters love and trust Jesus enough to be completely honest, their answers about identical.  If you can come sooner Jesus, yes Jesus we know we will see him again, but Jesus if you had come sooner.  It amazes me that we (specifically me) struggle with totally honest with God.  We try to sugar coat what we think and feel, like God doesn't already know the depths of the hurt we go through, the questions that are raised.  Ahh, I digress yet again.  My point in all this is, although Jesus is reprimand Martha and not Mary at this point that doesn't mean her heart wasn't in the right place at the start.  I tend to think, much like me, Martha once she got started got wrapped up in making sure everyone was fed, tended to, felt loved, and lost sight of listening to that still small of voice.  Just a ponder.....
